CONTROL (2019) is an action-adventure game developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by 505 Games. Remedy Entertainment is a developer from the city of Espoo, Finland. I know Remedy Entertainment through Quantum Break (2016), which at that time looked very promising, but unfortunately it was not very successful when it was released specifically for Xbox One. Game CONTROL itself has actually gotten off my radar, and I only found out about this title when I was nominated for GOTY 2019.
This game takes a third person perspective, the protagonist named Jesse Faden, played by Courtney Hope, in general, this game will tell about supernatural events that occur in a mysterious office facility called the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC). FBC itself is a secret agent organization belonging to the US government whose job is to record and study phenomena that violate the law of reality. The beginning of the story, Jesse’s character comes to the FBC office guided by a mysterious entity that is in Jesse’s mind, this entity is named Polaris. When Jesse first arrived, it turned out that the FBC office was in a lock down state, because FBC could not control an extraordinary event that spawned a monster from another dimension called Hiss. Jesse’s goal at FBC is to find his younger brother named Dylan. Of course this is an interesting start in my opinion, a mysterious beginning with a clear purpose of looking for his younger brother, only the details will be revealed slowly.
I like a game that has a clear process, both in terms of the process of developing the main character which gradually becomes strong or the process of explaining the storyline of the world in the game, and all that I got from this game. The main character Jesse who suddenly became the Director of FBC made me even more wondering and curious about the story of this game. We will be taken to a world that is quite mysterious, where in it there are mysterious objects that we will slowly reveal. I think the story of the CONTROL game is quite fresh, I’ve never played a game with a storyline like this.
This game uses Remedy’s Northlight Engine which works very optimally, with crazy lighting which is very good, this game is claimed to be the game that can best optimize Real-Time Ray Tracing (RTX) on the market. Even though PS4 Pro doesn’t support RTX yet, I admit I have never seen a light reflection effect as good as this game, while in several places I stopped and enjoyed the view. The lighting graphics of this game are quite optimal, maybe because this game is open world type, so you can say that we will move from one room to another which is not too big in size. However, from the various types of rooms, there are quite a variety of styles, shapes, architecture, and some rooms look quite unique.
Another interesting thing is, almost all objects in this game can be destroyed, the main character has the Telekinesis ability to lift and throw objects at enemies, objects that are thrown will shatter or explode into pieces, and almost all objects can be destroyed, making this game. quite interesting, because when you are in a room that is neatly arranged, and there is a fight there, everything will scatter in chaos. Initially, when I was still adapting, I mostly used a gun, and I knew that after getting used to the controls in this game the combination of telekinesis and a gun was quite exciting. After killing the enemy, the enemy will drop currency and sometimes components that we can use to strengthen our weapons and armor.
I give the story line of this game a thumbs up, the story is simple, there are not too many supporting characters involved, allowing me to understand the story of this game more easily, unlike the RDR 2 game which has too many characters. We are also informed about the background regarding the FBC facility prior to the lock down of various documents scattered in this facility. Not only that, the background of the main characters Jesse and Dylan is told in the video clips played by dolls. There will be several characters such as Head of Operations, Head of Research etc., where each department head will control his own division, and there are several division heads who are missing and we have to look for them.
The music of this game uses a soundtrack from a band called Poets of the Fall, an alternative soft rock band from Finland, there is a room that plays 1 track of this band, the title is My Dark Disquiet and the music is quite nice to hear. One more session, there is a session where the main character has to enter a maze and to get out of the maze we have to listen to music from one of the Object of Power in the form of a Walkman, and the music track from the Walkman is Take Control and the song is enough to pump up enthusiasm to be able to. through the maze with the enemies in it.
In this game there is also an Object of Power, which is an object / object that has an odd power in it, and each of these objects has various forms, some are in the form of an ashtray, red telephone, refrigerator, TV, wall clock, floppy. disks etc., even the pistol used by Jesse was an object of power. Each object of power has various powers that can affect the surrounding nature, here Jesse’s character must collect and tame some of these object of power objects. One of the objects of power is a slide projector that has the ability to open portals from another world, and this slide projector was once owned by Jesse and his sister, and accidentally when the portal gate opened, Polaris entered Jesse’s mind. Long story short, an agent from FBC came and secured the object of power along with Jesse’s younger brother Dylan.
Hiss or monsters that appear from other dimensions resemble humans that look like zombies, you could say the enemies of this game are quite aggressive, sometimes attacking with a rocket launcher weapon that will chase the main character wherever he goes or there are also enemies using a sniper who will shoot us from a height. Getting to the middle of the enemy will have strong armor and have various abilities. Our characters must always move, take cover and change weapons so that the enemy doesn’t hit our character. There are several bosses in this game and it feels like not fighting a boss, because sometimes it’s normal, and the shape also resembles other enemies, only there are some bosses that are quite large in size.
The minus of this game in my opinion is that it is only a few assets that are repeated frequently, so I see the same object over and over again but it is not too annoying. I also saw a graphic that looks grainy, I don’t know if this is the effect of using Ray Tracing technology so that light can reflect well or is it minus the engine. We will also often backtrack to arenas that we have visited, but this is helped a little by the presence of several fast travel portals. What I don’t like the most about this game is the map system which is very confusing, because this game has multiple floors while the map used is only a 2-dimensional map, so I personally find it a bit difficult to read.
